Fans/atmosphere

A good turnout considering the fact the kick-off time, the fact is was live on TV and the diversions which had to be dealt with because of the Hemel Hempstead happenings. However, I would estimate 1,000 awayday Hatters travelled. The Saints fans to the right off us, behind the goal we were behind sang all game, and most of the time Harry Redknapp's name came into it, but I would like to congratulate both sets of supporters on the originality of the songs. Firstly, Redknapp, and then the visiting fans who sang about the smoke in (nearby to our home town) Hertfordshire!

Day's ratings

Stadium - 8/10 St Mary's
Home fans - 7/10 Lowest of all time at the stadium, but they did sing near to us
Away fans - 8/10 Very, very tough conditions for this match which have been mentioned. well done loyal supporters
Journey - 4/10 One of the worst ever watching Luton, diversions as the M1 was shut all day, and the fact we went home via Berkhampstead and Tring, from the south coast, amazing!
Programme - 6/10 Expensive and from what I can see, average. Saying that, the piece on Luton is second to none
Match itself - 4/10 Woeful really, had it not been for a couple of good flowing moves forward from the Town, it'd have been even lower. One positive; Coventry was much worse
Performance - Nearly as bad of that six weeks ago at the Ricoh Arena, which says it all to be perfectly honest, no where near good enough away from home
Hatters' star Man - Foley (8/10) didn't do a lot wrong, nor did Brill but his error cost us a point

Southampton 1-0 Luton Town

Match Report

A sixth consecutive awayday defeat, and for the large amount of Hatters who turned up at the St Mary's Stadium today, considering the day and time of the fixture, the diversions on the road, and the fact we are nearing Christmas, it was a very disappointing performance and result to witness. The match started badly when Saints fans demanded an early penalty, and to be fair, it seemed like a good call, one personally I wouldn't have been going mad about, had it been given.

Our first chance of the match came when Robinson's cross was almost converted but Howard's header went wide of the post. Five minutes after this however, young Theo Walcott outpaced Coyne, and, with seemingly little danger, managed to grab a goal thanks to Brill's decision to come off his line. A sublime lob it was, the young 'keepers fault it was too.
*GOAL 24 minutes SAINTS 1-0 Hatters

Very little else happened before the interval, although an attempted overhead kick from Coyne almost caused the hosts problems
*Half-time Southampton 1-0 Luton Town

For the majority of the second half it seemed like Southampton would double their lead, although going forward, in parts, we looked classy and skillful, but the terrible lack of a final touch was there for all to see (including the watching nation). Niemi's blunder at the far post almost saw Howard in, but the big man was unable to turn quick enough to score, and from the resulting corner, yet again, nothing came of it.

Like at the Ricoh six weeks ago, we had late pressure but deserved nothing from the game. Our away form is in desperate need of improvement. Up next is the Boxing Day trip ti derbyshire, again!
